Google Scholar Tips and Tricks

Cited and Related Reference Searching

Google Scholar allows you to see articles that have cited a particular article ("Cited by" searching) or articles that have substantially similar citations to a particular article ("Related articles" searching).

Not all articles have been cited, and while this is one measure of citations, there is no single method to find all possible citations to a single article. We recommend using both this and the Web of Science to do citation searches for all disciplines (not just science).

Search Within Results

Once you have clicked on either "Cited by x" or "Related Articles," you can search through the resulting articles by checking the "Search within citing articles" checkbox prior to performing your search.

These guides brought to you by the librarians of Carleton and St. Olaf, collaborating through the Bridge Consortium.
